Veteran's Affairs Announces New Outreach to Homeless Vets

At a recent meeting of the Bell county Homeless Alliance convened by Leslie Hinkle, City of Killeen, Paula L. Wood, LCSW, Program Manager announced to the members a new voucher program to assist the veteran to resume an independent and dignified life. In addition to the voucher, Ms. Wood stated that this will provide case management; entry to veteran services and an aggressive effort to assist those who have served regain a productive life.

The criteria of the program is that the veteran be currently homeless, demonstrate a clinical need for case management, be able to live independently, be under the HUD/VASH poverty level, not a registered sex offender and have an additional source of income. This does not include deposits which must come from other resources.
At the same presentation Ms. Wood’s colleague Bryan S. Philips LMSW-IPR stated “In the past it could take up to 60 days to secure a DD214 proof of eligibility and we have this process down to a matter of days. This will facilitate a much quicker entry into VA services. These services include residential treatment, employment services, and women’s trauma services, filing for veterans and social security disability and case management.

Ms. Wood stated that she and her colleagues stand ready to work with other programs to assist those who have served our nation achieve a more dignified and product life.
